Refining Ugly Art

I decided to go with Bernard Buffett, a mere painting of a clown. I could have chosen any piece of art that I found ugly, however, that is merely subjective as what I may find ugly may very well be moving or beautiful to the next individual.

I have to say, after attempting to recreate a new rendition that I might find more appealing, I've come to find that it was harder than anticipated. It's easy for someone to ridicule or criticize someone else's work , yet when you attempt to do better you fail. This is not always the case, however, I do find it humbling regardless of the lack of passion for 2d art. below is an example of some drafts.

I'm not the only one in my house that has seen to many clowns thanks to this assignment. I presented my work including the original to my 5 year old daughter who said "eeeeeew" to each and every one of them. Well, it doesnt make me feel any better but here is my Final.

Refined? I'd say not. Let's be honest the original was better in my opinion, though If digital modifications were allowed, then it would certainly be something I would put in my living room wall. for example:

Now this is something I would hang in my living room.
In respects to the original, however, regardless of my own lack of skill to compare, The original in my subjective feeling seems bland leaving no emotion and telling no story, as a painting it feels as though its lacking technique and a variety of elements. On the other hand Objectively speaking the background is a bit appealing, the texture and disarray of the colors help give it a grit, it's also relatively symmetrical and bestows upon us a gaze with very large eyelashes!
Despite putting myself down, I feel as though I have taken one step forward and can continue to refine not only the work inspired by others but also my own as well.
